About Me

I'm Marten Lienen. I like programming and maths. Though I do not like to admit, I cannot deny that I have a weakness for programming languages. At one point or another I have written at least a thousand lines in each of C++, Python, Ruby, PHP, Lua, Javascript, Emacs Lisp, Clojure, Java, Julia and C and I look forward to an opportunity to try Rust, Haskell, Common Lisp, Scheme, Scala or Assembler in practice. To truly understand something, just reading a book or the manual just does not cut it. At the same time I cannot tell you how to find the first occurrence of a character in a string idiomatically in more than two of these off the top of my head. You can find some of my publicly available code on the code page.

I am also doing research on machine learning methods and applications. The publications page has a list of them.

Since I have seen Citizenfour, I have made up my mind about the importance of privacy and encryption. All connections to this server are encrypted with a certificate from Let's Encrypt and I try to rely on self-hosted software whenever it is reasonable. In the future I will work on encrypting my SSDs, exploring GPG for email encryption, selecting a long-term provider for VPN and secure backups with restic.
